West Usk Lighthouse – Principal Keeper’s Room- Wales
|Price (£/GBP):||Min 2 night stay|
The West Usk Lighthouse is truly amazing in every way, situated near the city of Newport, Gwent at the junction of the Severn and the Usk Estuaries which overlooks the Bristol Channel.
Built in 1821 by Scottish architect, James Walker, it is unique among lighthouses having all the accommodation situated within the building itself creating a distinctive design that is bigger in circumference and shorter in height.
The Principal Keeper’s Room was designed by the Hotel Inspector and offers a fantastic sea view along with a king size waterbed.
It has an en-suite facilities with a shower rather than a bath. There is a large 40? Smart TV in the room with access to Wi-Fi and catch up television. You also have access to the lighthouse’s large DVD collection. You have your own fridge in the room too for that bottle of bubbly for a special occasion.
Gaze out of the window at the tremendous sea views and wonder in the history of your surroundings.
When you enter the Lighthouse there is a beautiful entrance hall with stone spiral staircase running through the centre of the lighthouse and beneath that is the rain collecting well which is now a wishing well / wine cellar. With a resident Dalek at the foot of the stairs and a Doctor Who TARDIS on the roof (changing room for the hot tub), there’s the added bonus for Doctor Who fans.
The HOT TUB can be found on the roof garden with the most amazing views making it a beautiful spot to watch the sun go down with a tipple in hand.
The West Usk Lighthouse is not just a bed and breakfast venue but is licensed for weddings too. 25 guests are catered for during the civil ceremony, including a sit down meal and if you’ve got more we can provide a marquee and cater for up to 80 guests in the evening. A superb venue for your special occasion.
Romantic or family retreat you choose, it’s a paradise for all to enjoy.

There are many great walks and mountain bike trails in the area, including Cwmcarn Forrest Drive, Fourteen Locks, Twmbarlwm, The Wetlands Reserve (great for bird watching) and the Coastal Path which you can of course join just outside.
There is Springfield Riding Stable in the village. Boulders Climbing Centre is around 20 minutes away. Wales Outdoors does a wide range of activites like archery, surfing, kayaking and abseiling. A good one for children (and adults) would be the local trampoline park.
If you are a fan of golf, we have the world renowned Celtic Manor Resort 20 minutes away which hosted the 2010 Ryder Cup, or the more local Peterstone Lakes Golf Course where there is also fishing, which is 10 minutes away.
Tredegar House is a beautiful National Trust property located only a short distance away from the lighthouse. In fact, the land the lighthouse was built on once belonged to the aristocratic family who lived there.
Other places of interest include, the romantic Castle Coch and the castles of Caldicot, Chepstow, Raglan, Cardiff, & the largest in Wales Caerphilly Castle, The Transporter Bridge, Tintern Abbey, the coal mine ‘Big Pit‘, Dyffryn Gardens and Arboretum, National Museum Cardiff, St. Fagans National History Museum, and plenty more. For young children we would recommend Techniquest in Cardiff Bay.
